The exchange of fire occurred in the Dudu-Basantgarh area during a cordon and search operation launched following intelligence inputs about terrorist presence in the region.

“GOC (General Officer Commanding), White Knight Corps and all ranks salute braveheart Havildar Jhantu Ali Shaikh of 6 PARA SF, who made the supreme sacrifice during a counter terror operation. His indomitable courage and the valour of his team will never be forgotten. We stand in solidarity with the bereaved family in this moment of grief,” the White Knight Corps, based in Jammu, stated in a post on X.

This encounter came just two days after terrorists killed 26 tourists in a shooting in Pahalgam, Anantnag district of Jammu and Kashmir.

Among the victims were a Navy officer, an Air Force personnel, and an Intelligence Bureau official, in what is being described as the worst terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir in recent times.

India on Wednesday downgraded its diplomatic relations with Pakistan and introduced a series of tough measures, including the expulsion of Pakistani military attachés, suspension of the decades-old Indus Waters Treaty, and immediate closure of the Attari land transit point, citing “cross-border links” to the Pahalgam terror attack.

The measures were announced following a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS), chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, which instructed security forces to remain on “high vigil” and vowed to bring those responsible for the attack to justice.
